The Mulberry Tree

Writings of Elizabeth Bowen

Elizabeth Bowen; Hermione Lee

From Publishers Weekly

These essays, prefaces, reviews, letters and talks by Anglo-Irish novelist and short-story writer Bowen (18991973) include reminiscences and autobiographical sketches of schoolgirl years, wartime London, breaking into print, as well as commentaries on Ivy Compton-Burnett, Cyril Connolly, Angus Wilson, Eudora Welty and other contemporaries. Among the letters are several to Virginia Woolf and William Plomer and part of a previously published correspondence with Graham Greene and V. S. Pritchett on ‘Why Do I Write?’ Articles evaluate the work of Flaubert, Trollope and Katharine Mansfield. That Bowen’s criticism and occasional writings are inextricably related to her fiction is well brought out by Lee (Elizabeth Bowen: An Estimation in her preface and sectional introductions. From Library Journal

An Anglo-Irish writer best known for her novels and short stories, Bowen was also a prolific writer of nonfiction. Lee here gathers nearly 50 essays, prefaces, reviews, letters, broadcasts, and autobiographical pieces that Bowen wrote between 1934 and 1972, the year before her death. Some selections have appeared in earlier collections, but others are gathered here for the first time. The book is a valuable companion to Bowen’s fiction, a record of her life and her opinions on writers, writing, and the world in which she lived. Lee’s introductions and notes make the book especially useful for nonspecialists interested in learning more about Bowen. Michael Hennessy, English Dept., John Carroll Univ., Cleveland, Ohio
