Ninth Life by Lauren Wright Douglas

Ninth Life

Lauren Wright Douglas

Ninth Life, Lauren’s second novel, won the Lambda Award for Best Lesbian Mystery (1990).

In the acclaimed debut of The Always Anonymous Beast, Lauren Wright Douglas introduced tough, resourceful Caitlin Reece, one of the most unconventional women ever to appear in a mystery novel.

The uncompromising PI once again prowls her terrain of Victoria, British Columbia, investigating a case as dramatic and immediate as today’s headlines.

Caitlin is hired by a woman, code named Shrew, to pick up a package. Caitlin is sickened to the depths of her being by the contents of the package: a blind and maimed cat, and photographs of animal experimentation.

And now Shrew is dead. A member of Ninth Life, a militant animal rights organisation, she had infiltrated living World, a cosmetics company. The other members of Ninth Life suspects she was betrayed by someone within their own ranks, and murdered because of something she has learned.

The director of Living World has made vehement public denials that his company is experimenting on animals for product development. Caitlin sees only one answer: to penetrate the security systems protecting Living World – alarms, dogs, guards, and discover the truth for herself.

From Publishers Weekly

Cynical, softhearted private detective Caitlin Reece makes her second appearance (after The Always Anonymous Beast ) in this topical, well-paced mystery. The perpetually broke Caitlin is lured to a midnight rendezvous by 10 new $100 bills. A young woman named Shrew shows up, but she is being chased by two men in a car and has time only to toss something into a dumpster, which Caitlin discovers is a blinded and abused cat. After hearing the next morning that Shrew has died in a suspicious accident, Caitlin meets with Alison Bell, Shrew’s associate in an animal rights organization called Ninth Life, and learns that the cat was evidence of lab experiments on animals conducted at Living World, a self-proclaimed ‘cruelty-free’ cosmetics company. Caitlin doesn’t want the case–Living World obviously plays rough–but she is persuaded by the money and by Alison, to whom she is attracted. Besides cosmetic company thugs, Caitlin comes up against members of CLAW, a splinter group of Ninth Life. The straightforward narrative is occasionally too cute, but overall this is an enjoyable and thought-provoking novel.
