Relatively Norma by Anna Livia

Relatively Norma

Anna Livia

Correct spelling of this outrageously funny title (a novel wherein all the men are called John) helps in comprehending the author’s intention. A London lesbian flies to Australia to visit and learn about her family as well as to ‘come out’.

Minnie, lesbian feminist from a Brixton squat, goes on a visit to Australia where Beryl, her mother, has started a new life with baby sister Ingrid, foster daughter Laura and second husband, a taxi driver John. Minnie goes determined to come out as a lesbian to her mother and sisters. But they have their own revelations to make and Minnie finds herself involved in Beryls attainment of her own, not a mother identity, Lauras wistful search for her adoptive father and Ingrids placid but intensely private world of gastronomic gratification.

Decide whether this is feminist farce or simply the best comedy you’ve read.
