Penny Mickelbury authors two successful mystery series: the Carole Ann Gibson Mysteries published by Simon and Schuster and the Mimi Patterson/Gianna Maglione Mysteries published by migibooks, now published by Kings Crossing Publishing. Both series feature strong, savvy female protagonists, two of whom are Black: Carole Ann Gibson is the first Black female criminal defense attorney in the American Mystery genre, and Mimi Patterson is the first black female investigative newspaper reporter in the genre. L. Gianna Maglione heads the D.C. Police Department’s Hate Crimes Unit and the naturally adversarial relationship between cops and reporters is greatly exacerbated by the fact that Mimi and Gianna are lovers

Mickelbury is a former newspaper, radio and television reporter, based primarily in Washington, D.C. Mickelbury, a native of Atlanta, Georgia, lives in Los Angeles. The novelist and former journalist also is an accomplished playwright. She is one of the playwrights whose work was chosen by the California African-American Museum to be presented as part of its Radio Theatre program.

Honors continue as the Givens Collection of African American Literature at the University of Minnesota has requested Ms. Mickelbury’s personal papers for collection and preservation. The Carole Ann Gibson series received the Prix du Roman d’Adventures Award given by French publishers. ‘Night Songs’ was a 1995 Lambda Literary Award nominee.

Keeping Secrets and Night Songs will be re-released by Kings Crossing Publishing in 2003 and 2004 respectively.
