Blood Sisters

A Novel of an Epic Friendship

Mary Jacobsen

A novel of the generosity of spirit and friendship that goes beyond sexuality!

Emily Ashmont is blunt, cynical, fiercely committed to her work, and straight. Val Summers is romantic, sweet, immensely idealistic, lesbian, and in love with Emily. Blood Sisters: A Novel of an Epic Friendship tells the tale of these two unforgettable women and their decades-long friendship that deepens into an epic story all its own. Told through personal letters that reveal each woman’s innermost thoughts and desires, the novel chronicles their intimate friendship from the 1970s through the 1990s.

Each strong in her own way, Emily and Val share a connection that cannot be broken. From their abusive childhoods through their diligence to live life on their own terms, these soulmates traverse challenges together to emerge even closer than either thought possible. Blood Sisters: A Novel of an Epic Friendship spans the years illustrating the trials and tribulations of lifelong friends as they search for life’s meaning, both meeting problems head-on while showing the depth and courage of their hearts as well as the uniqueness of their relationship.

An excerpt:

You said I was free to go, but not to look to you for sympathy if I came back missing an eye, arm, or lung, not to mention innocence and sobriety. I said I had heard that some biker dykes hung out there, and I announced that I was going to find some action. You, of course, were supposed to feel stodgy and guilty, and volunteer to accompany me to the relative safety of the rathskellar. But you refused to play. You ignored me. Enraged, rejected and dejected, I set out for the Panther determined to prove something-what it was other than my idiocy and immaturity escapes me in hindsight.

Lucky for me, there was a biker convention in Portsmouth that weekend, and the Panther was sparsely populated. I ordered a Wild Turkey and sat at the bar, twirling a toothpick in my drink and feeling morose and lonely, staring deep into the golden liquor as if there were wisdom to be found at the bottom of the thick bottomed glass. I overheard some whispers to one side, and the next thing I knew the bartender, a burly guy named Rusty, was pushing a shot glass of Wild Turkey under my face. I looked up quizzically, having forgotten where I was.

‘Ronnie likes you,’ he winked. ‘But be careful, the last girl Ronnie liked was found belly up in the Charles with a bullet in her head’-he put an index finger to his temple-‘right here.’

Blood Sisters is a deeply stirring tale about finding a soulmate. At its heart, it’s a momentous love story that honors the nobility and power of love between friends, a love that transcends time, place, and sexuality.
