Judith Earle grows up isolated and longing for the attention of the glamorous, unstructured cousins who occasionally visit next door. Seeking her own path, she leaves for Cambridge University, where she is completely swept up in the intense world of an all-women’s college. There, she meets Jennifer, a brilliant and captivating student who becomes the true love of her youth. Their consuming romantic friendship eclipses everything else in Judith’s life, until a sophisticated older woman named Geraldine arrives to pull Jennifer away. Heartbroken, Judith must return to the outside world and face the ghosts of her childhood infatuations to finally figure out who she is on her own.
