Carla Freccero argues for a reading practice that accounts for the queerness of time, in which past, present and future appear out of sequence and in dialogue. Challenging New Historicist accounts of sexual identity, she proposes a ‘fantasmatic historiography’ joining history and fantasy. Her readings pair early and late modern texts: the lyrics of Petrarch, Louise Labé and Melissa Etheridge; Halperin’s Foucault through Apuleius and Boccaccio; French domestic partnership law with Marguerite de Navarre’s Heptameron; and Jean de Léry’s account of Brazil with the Brandon Teena case.
