It opens with anonymous texts from Hawaiian and Native American oral traditions, voodoo chants and cowboy songs, and then arranges poets by year of birth, from familiar names such as Gertrude Stein and Walt Whitman to lesser-known figures such as George Santayana and Adah Isaacs Menken.
