Gay men and lesbians from the Deep South to East Texas and Appalachia write from personal experience and turn an analytical eye on the South and its culture. Some contributors examine traditional Southern attitudes to race and religion and the ‘public secret’ of homosexuality in many communities; others show gay and lesbian culture thriving in women’s festivals, gay bars and networks such as Asian and Pacific Islanders in Atlanta. Organized around the metaphor of space and location, the book explores the inside/outside dilemma of gay and lesbian Southerners negotiating their place in an often inhospitable homeland.
