Alan Bray, author of Homosexuality in Renaissance England (1982), was a founding figure of early modern gay and lesbian studies and a pioneer of friendship studies. This special issue of GLQ collects essays by leading scholars of early modern sexuality that build on and test his work in new areas. Two essays explore friendship and intimacy between women, or between women and men; others move beyond Bray’s English focus to France, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg, or beyond the Renaissance. The issue also reviews Bray’s posthumous book The Friend and assesses his career.
