Liberal democracy has granted lesbians and gay men some rights, but those rights are limited and remain the focus of lesbian and gay movements in the United States. Craig Rimmerman looks at the past, present and future of these movements and asks whether they can link identity concerns with a progressive coalition for political, social and gender change that takes account of race, class and gender inequality. The book draws on eight years of interviews in Washington, D.C. and New York City and the author’s experience as a Capitol Hill staffer.
