A sociological study comparing liberal Seattle and conservative Spokane. Drawing on interviews with community leaders and everyday residents, both gay and lesbian and Christian conservative, Thomas Linneman examines how each group thinks about social change in relation to the media, the public, government, their communities and their opposition. He finds that both groups, despite real political influence, feel marginalized, explores why Christian conservatives see the progress of the gay and lesbian movement as a threat, and shows how liberal and conservative settings shape experiences of hostility or hospitality for both.
