In late 19th century Styria, Laura lives an isolated, lonely life in a schloss (castle) in the forest with only her doting father and two governesses for company. When a carriage accident occurs near their home, a mysterious young woman named Carmilla is brought to stay at the schloss to recover from a strange illness.
Laura is immediately entranced by the beautiful, witty, and charming Carmilla, whose history and habits are shrouded in mystery. As the two young women spend time together, Laura finds herself increasingly drawn to Carmilla through affectionate touches and words. Their attraction blossoms into an intense, passionate romance feelings that Laura struggles to name and accept, battling her own internalized homophobia and the social taboos of her era.
However, as their relationship deepens, a mysterious plague begins killing young women both in Laura’s household and in the nearby village. Laura must confront a horrifying possibility: that the gentle, seemingly fragile woman she loves might actually be a vampire a monster preying on the very victims dying around them. The novella explores Laura’s internal conflict as she wrestles with reconciling her love for Carmilla with the growing evidence of Carmilla’s supernatural, predatory nature.
Unlike the original 1872 novella by J. Sheridan Le Fanu (which was a cautionary tale), this retelling makes the romantic and physical relationship explicitly lesbian, and provides a reimagined, happier ending for the two women.
