Carrera’s first novel, a lesbian romance, has the makings of an interesting story, but the characters are so over the top that it’s difficult not to get totally fed up with them. Destiny, a popular music star (though we’re never told what kind of music), and Andrie, an aide to the most wicked congresswoman on the planet, seem on the verge of a relationship, but, naturally, all kinds of things keep getting in the way. Both of these characters are only mildly likable, and instead of being able to escape into a good romance, readers will be left wishing they could escape from these irritating characters. An extremely complicated side plot that sets up all the trouble is almost incomprehensible. Though well meaning, this novel misses the mark. Not recommended.ACaroline Mann, Univ. of Portland Lib., OR
