The New Lesbian Studies

Amazon.com Review

The New Lesbian Studies includes 31 new essays representing the best in scholarship and theory in the study of lesbianism from both inside and outside the U.S. The text has sections on incorporating lesbian studies into academia and student services; understanding the origins of lesbian studies; exploring the questions proposed by lesbian studies; and offering us new voices, personal testimony, and multicultural perspectives. The collection is a necessary addition to lesbian and queer studies–an emerging genre in social, theoretical, and literary studies. –This text refers to the Paperback edition.

From Library Journal

When first published, Margaret Cruikshank’s Lesbian Studies (1982. o.p.) was the first work to provide educators with a much-needed text for course instruction. Sharing that same purpose, this work offers a diverse collection of essays that reflect the changes that have occurred in the last 15 years. Editors Zimmerman (The Safe Sea of Women: Lesbian Fiction 1969-1989, Beacon, 1990) and McNaron (Poisoned Ivy, LJ 3/15/97) incorporated original essays from the 1982 edition with current essays on topics ranging from homophobia in collegiate women’s sports to the dual oppression experienced by lesbian women of color, to the emerging ‘queer theory’ branch of gay and lesbian studies. Although the quality of the writing varies, the strength of this edition lies in the rich variety of information provided to educators in the field. Recommended for academic libraries with women’s or gay and lesbian studies departments and to larger public librares.?Karen Duff, Boston P.L.
