The story of Rose Valland, the curator at the Jeu de Paume museum in Paris who stayed at her post through the German occupation while the Nazis used the museum as the sorting centre for art looted mainly from French Jewish families. Hiding the fact that she understood German, she secretly recorded where tens of thousands of works were sent, and after the war her records helped the Monuments Men recover them. Drawing on newly found documents, the book also follows art dealer Paul Rosenberg and his son Alexandre, and Valland's life with her partner, Joyce Heer, a British translator interned by the Germans in 1940; the two women stayed together until Heer's death in 1977 and are buried together.
