Three intertwined threads circle the 1961 case of an interracial couple, known only as husband and wife and based on Betty and Barney Hill, who under hypnosis recalled being taken by aliens on a New Hampshire mountain road. In the second thread, Phyllis, a budding science-fiction writer and a lesbian in the repressive 1960s, writes letters to her beloved, Rosa, about longing, loneliness and finding community. In the present day, a reclusive, chronically ill Archivist who may have had a forgotten childhood encounter becomes obsessed with both Phyllis's letters and the abductees' testimony.
