A History of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras
Graham Carbery; Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Association
Most Australians have come to know Sydney’s Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras as a visual spectacle without equal. However, behind the colour and glamour of the event lies a long history of struggle and confrontation. The growth of the parade, festival, Mardi Gras and Sleaze parties have occured against a background of conflict within the Mardi Gras’ organising committees, as well as the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities at large. And barely a year goes by without Mardi Gras being faced with some external obstacle to presenting the parade or parties. This book provides the reader with a ‘warts and all’ account of the development of this event. While it is written for the general reader, it contains a comprehensive index and footnotes to assist those wanting to explore aspects of Mardi Gras in more depth. Note: this book was published in 1995, and therefore does not contain any information on developments beyond this time.
