An anthropological study of people in Japan whose lives and ideas are at odds with Japanese norms of marriage: gay and lesbian people, women’s and men’s liberationists, single people, and transsexual, transvestite and intersex people. The research began with the author’s 1986 visit to Japan, when as a 25-year-old openly gay Dutchman he was repeatedly asked whether he was married or had a girlfriend.
