Black Panther Woman by Mary Frances Phillips

The Political and Spiritual Life of Ericka Huggins

Good, 4 stars

A biography of Ericka Huggins, a queer Black woman who was a leader in the Black Panther Party, as well as a mother, widow, educator, poet and former political prisoner. In 1969 she was arrested with Bobby Seale and other Party members accused of murdering Alex Rackley, and she then faced political persecution and an FBI COINTELPRO plot. Phillips focuses on the spiritual wellness and self-care practices Huggins developed in prison, which helped her endure repression while raising her child, and on her later life and work.
