Capital by Maureen Duffy

Follows Meeper's, a shabby homeless eccentric, as his quest leads him from the gardening hut where he sleeps, to Kensington Gardens, to the university, where he sits in on the lectures of a professor with whom he develops a curious, strained intellectual relationship, which gradually draws in other members of the class.
