Amazon.com Review
The cover of this book shows a tabby cat lying sleepily in the sun and a patch of green grass with two daisies. If it weren’t for the word ‘dyke’ in the title, this anthology of lesbian definitions of ‘home’ could be mistaken for anyone’s idea of the American dream–which is, of course, part of editor Susan Fox Roger’s point. While some at the radical origins of the women’s, gay, and lesbian liberation movements may have explored non-monogamy, communal child rearing and eradication of personal property ownership, more and more queers these days are living a lifestyle they had once called conservative: marrying, raising children, and owning houses–in short, making a home. For Robin Becker, home ‘is the place where I make my living.’ For Merrill Mushroom, it is ‘where my children think we’re rich.’ The other twenty contributors to this anthology suggest that home is the locus of our past, a place we are both glad to escape and also long to return to. –Rebecca Brown
Product Description
Home is a loaded word, especially so for lesbians who at times are viewed as home wreckers rather than homemakers. For many, home evokes an idyllic tableau, a family nestled safely behind the white picket fence. In Chasing the American Dyke Dream: Homestretch, 23 lesbian writers celebrate their personal search for home. As lesbians, what do we call home? Is it that sense of safety and familiarity that makes us feel ‘centered, happy, sexy, alive’? Or the physical structures we rent, build, buy, move into and out of, alone or with lovers, cats, children, dogs? Chasing the American Dyke Dream: Homestretch offers rich, poignant visions of home, both homes of origin and homes we create to replace the ‘deep closets’ many of us escaped in order to find our places in the world. Features Robin Becker, Valerie Miner, Louise Rafkin, Linda Smukler, tatiana de la tierra, Terry Wolverton, Elaine Beale
