Down and out in San Francisco, after a break-up with her high-school lover, Dana runs (literally) into a Southern matron who offers her a job as a maid. What looked like the way out of her financial difficulties becomes a way into emotional entanglements -- with her alcoholic boss; with Frankie, a bike dyke; and Jerri, an academic who enjoys sex as power. Through it all Dana struggles for self-esteem, independence and love.
