————-
Darcy Bennett is having nightmares again. She’s a child, cramped into a tiny space where she had been hidden by her mother, until a hulking man approaches, hears her crying, and reaches down menacingly for her. Darcy’s new friend and love interest, Toni Underwood, wants to help Darcy understand the source of her dreams, and travels with her to Whidbey Island in Washington’s Puget Sound, where she was raised by her Aunt Mae and Uncle Fred. Here, Aunt Mae confesses that Darcy’s parents weren’t killed in a plane accident when she was little. They were murdered by Uncle Fred’s psychopathic half brother, a boy named Aaron Blake. Now a man, Aaron has escaped from the mental asylum, and all Darcy has to protect her from him is Aunt Mae, with her rusty old rifle, and the ex-cop Toni Underwood. With its simple language, fast pace, and gothic undertones, the third Toni Underwood mystery may remind readers of the early thrillers of Mary Higgins Clark. A quick read, with plenty of sex and action. –Regina Marler
