Expenses
Penny S. Lorio
Expenses is a novel that deals with the cost of living and the price of loving. It is the story of two women from different social worlds who try to build a life together despite the odds that their histories have stacked against them. Marty Winchell, a bright, career minded columnist for a daily newspaper, has the city laughing with her as she holds a mirror to the public eye and offers people a look inside themselves. But in her own world, beyond the defense of her pen, she stumbles through occasional overnight relationships, looking for real love in the disco lit caverns of gay nightlife. Marty’s best friend, Barb, fumbles along in her own search for love, trying to keep her head above water and fight the feelings of inadequacy and rejection that threaten to pull her under. Through a dramatic chance encounter, Marty meets Janis Daly. A wealthy, beautiful woman of society, Janis dances her life to the male choreographed stigmas of her family’s expectations. Janis and Marty discover a bond of friendship that grows into a tender love that they try to preserve through the traumas of family pressure, physical abuse by Janis’s ex-fiance, and unexpected dilemmas and losses.
