Gay and Lesbian Asia
Culture, Identity, Community
Gerard Sullivan; Peter A. Jackson
Jackson (Thai history, Australian National U.) and Sullivan (education, U. of Sydney) present 13 articles which explore the multifaceted worlds of gay, lesbian, and transgendered identities in a number of Asian countries. Thailand, China, South Korea, Singapore, India, the Philippines, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Indonesia are all covered. For the most part these are general studies on the cultures of gays and the dominant culture’s reaction to gays in Asia, but a few of the articles look at more specific topics such as the relationship of class and lesbianism in Jakarta and the way homosexuality is portrayed on film in Asia. The articles approach the topic from a range of theoretical perspectives, including globalization theory, Foucauldian analysis, and cultural analysis. Also published as the Journal of Homosexuality , v. 40, nos. 3/4, 2001. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
