Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning Teen Literature by Carlisle K. Webber

Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning Teen Literature

A Guide to Reading Interests

Carlisle K. Webber

From School Library Journal

This slim volume will be a welcome guide for librarians who want to diversify their collections with current materials or who need readers’ advisory assistance for their patrons. The titles are divided into six broad categories, and then subdivided into themes. For example, Coming of Age includes GLBTQ Identity Coming Out First Love and Collections and Anthologies. Each entry is annotated, with notations for awards, reading level, and sexual-identity appropriateness. The final chapter includes a discussion of collection development and the author’s core list of fiction and nonfiction. An appendix lists an eclectic assortment of organizations, blogs, booklists, awards, and books. There’s one problem with the overall thematic approach: while the author explains why she includes titles in a particular section, many of these distinctions are quite nuanced, and many of the books could have been included in several different themes. Overall, though, this is a useful addition. Betty S. Evans, Missouri State University, Springfield

From Booklist

With the slow but steady increase of acceptance of GLBTQ people, the need for literature that addresses teens who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or questioning is an issue in collection development. This entry in the Genreflecting Advisory Series provides an excellent starting point. An informative and insightful introduction is followed by six chapters providing book lists by category (arranged in alphabetical order by author). Each entry contains a detailed, readable annotation. Annotations are followed by codes indicating suggested grade levels, awards and honors, and keywords. The final chapter offers informed essays on collection development and book challenges. An appendix lists Web sites and professional resources. Author/title, subject, and keyword indexes complete this usable volume. Similar in content to Michael Cart and Christine Jenkins’ The Heart Has Its Reasons (Scarecrow, 2006), this contains more up-to-date lists, though the dedicated professional might want to reference both. A sound purchase for public libraries but especially useful for high-school librarians. –Ann Welton
