This collection examines how and why mass communication shapes the sexual realities of our lives. Contributors from a range of theoretical and methodological orientations look at how television, radio, film, newspapers, magazines and recorded music contribute to the definitions we form of ourselves and of each other. Chapters address minority perspectives in the study of media content and effects, media coverage of AIDS and the responsibility to report it accurately, television and sexual socialization, and the experiences of people whose sexual orientations fall outside the mainstream. The volume closes with a selective bibliography of print, audio and visual resources on gay men, lesbians and the mass media.
