In ancient Greece and Rome, in the Crusades and among pirates, same-sex romance was a common part of military life, and from the Peloponnesian War to the Gulf War, from Achilles to Lawrence of Arabia, gays and lesbians have played a hidden role in war. B. R. Burg assembles documents on these warriors: accounts of the Amazons, writings of Plato, Seneca and Suetonius, court-martial records of seventeenth-century English women who passed as men to serve, and evidence of officers' romantic friendships.
