Caserta, now more than a quarter decade sober, disowns this work as that of Knapp. Knapp was the ghostwriter, and in 2018, said he was ‘not interested’ in talking to Vulture (NY Magazine website) about the book. Caserta said in that Vulture interview,
‘I didn’t write that trash. I sold out for drug money, and I’ve lived in the shadow of it for 40-some-odd years. That book scandalized my family. My mother and father were devastated. I lost my friends. I was so embarrassed that I just dropped out. I’m not going to make excuses for using, because a drug addict really needs no excuse, but every time that I thought I could get clean or tried to get clean, I would think about that book, and all I’d want to do is numb out again. I was so horrified by it and my parents were oh, God, they were heartbroken. It was horrible. Nothing good came of it. I hate that book. What I hate about who they think I am is that most of them believe I wrote that smut.’
