Letters to Our Children
Lesbian and Gay Adults Speak to the New Generation
Larry Dane Brimner
Grade 6 Up. A collection of messages from gay and lesbian adults from all walks of life to young people. Brimner presents a variety of writers talking about who they are, what they do, and what it is like for them to be homosexual in a society that, as a whole, has little understanding of and little tolerance for homosexuality. Among the people presented here are an archbishop, attorney, college professor, economist, psychologist, school teacher, and writer. Coming out, confronting prejudice and discrimination, and realizing one’s homosexuality and celebrating it are among the issues discussed. The styles of each of these essays varies, of course, but all share the qualities of being sincere and encouraging. Black-and-white photos of the contributors are included. The book concludes with a list for further reading, resources for further information, brief biographical sketches of the contributors, and source notes for each chapter. Young adults who have realized their homosexuality or who are still wrestling with their sexual orientation will find this book comforting and inspiring. It would be a shame, however, for it to be limited to that audience alone, as it will shatter stereotypes and misconceptions many heterosexuals have of gays and lesbians.?Edward Sullivan, New York Public Library
