Looking For Ammu by Claire Macquet

What kind of hold can a crime empire whose tentacles spread from international gunrunning to brothel burnings have on saintly, but steely, Dr. Ammu Bai, who believes that health comes from the soul? For years she and her nurse-tutor, prissy, devoted Harriet Weston have run clinics in Mauritius. But now Harriet, summoned to London by Ammu, finds that she has disappeared.

Harriet’s search leads into the city’s squalid underbelly – to the louche, whisky-raddled Sophie who knew Ammu ‘like crap’ and can hardly bear the nights without her. And Brucie, a young dyke with a penchant for the dubious pleasures of the Purgatorial Fires club. In this twilight world Harriet seeks Ammu but hears instead of a woman implicated in a world of child porn, pimping and gun deals. But where is she, whoever she is?
