‘On a Grey Thread’ was the first book of openly lesbian poetry published in the United States. Elsa Gidlow (1898-1986) was born in Hull, Yorkshire. When a young child her family emigrated to Canada. In 1920, she moved to New York before settling in San Francisco in 1927. Separately, although published by Will Ransom (Number VI in the Series of First Volumes) it was not printed by him
