Paper, Scissors, Rock by Ann Decter

Powerful first novel of a family history in the Prairies,' Ann Dector brings us a narrator who works her way through a tangle of personal reminiscences and public narratives: the 1911 General Strike and Irish Republicanism are peopled with Baba Edith and Granny Grace Barry O'Connell; conflicted pain over her father's lingering death threads through impersonal radio reports of the Aboriginal Justic Inuiry; her parents' difficult marraige counterparts her love for a distant woman.'
