Since the late nineteenth century, through foreign domination, dictatorship, dispersal and division, queer Koreans have been ignored or erased from narratives of the modern nation. This interdisciplinary collection challenges that erasure through studies of non-normative sexuality and gender variance, from shamanic rituals in the colonial era and B-grade comedies under Cold War dictatorship to female masculinity among today’s youth and transgender encounters with the resident registration system.
