Second Fiddle
Jon Parker
Dee Squire jumped up and ran after him. She was almost in tears. ‘How can you ask me to do such a thing?’ she said hotly. He went into the bedroom and was about to shut the door in her face but she got through.
He sat on the bed and gripped his knees. His face was pasty white. ‘Will you please leave me alone?’
Dee sat on the bed next ho him. ‘Tony, don’t act like this.’
He faced her. ‘We agreed there won’t be any children. For the first few years anyway. Didn’t we?’
‘Yes, but.
‘But what?’
‘These things happen,’ she said lamely.
‘You should have prevented it. Listen, are you sure you’re pregnant? Maybe you’re mistaken.’
‘There can’t be any mistakes. I’m late. I’ve never been this late before.’
‘All right then. Do as I tell you.’
‘Go to an abortionist,’ she said, her face pale. ‘How can you ask me to do such a thing?’
‘It’s the only way.’
‘But-but what if something should happen?’
‘Nothing will happen. This doctor is good. He’s no butcher.’
‘There have been accidents. Anything can happen on the operating table. I’d taking an awful chance.’
Tony put his hand on his wife’s knee. ‘Remember Sidney Bandini? At that party Hodges threw when the Lucky Dust detergent account was renewed? Bandini? He was with his wife, a little woman with big knockers?’
‘Yes, I think so.’
‘Well, Sidney mentioned this doctor. He’s taken his wife to him several times.’ ‘That little woman?’
‘That little woman keeps getting caught like it was an epidemic. They don’t want kids and Sid won’t want kids and Sid won’t use protection. So every time she gets in the family way he bundles her up and takes her to Doctor Kessler.’
‘I – I have to think about it.’
He snorted. ‘There’s nothing to think about. Let me call Sid now. All right? It’ll only take a few minutes.’
‘Call Sid? You mean you’ll have to tell him? Doesn’t he work with you? Won’t everyone at the agency know about it?’
‘Sid will keep his mouth shut.’
‘Oh, no, Tony. Please. I รณ I’m afraid everybody will know. I don’t want everybody to know our business.’
‘I’ll Sid I’m calling for a friend.’
‘He’ll know you’re lying.’
‘No, he won’t. Dee, this can’t go on.’ Tony’s face was flushed. ‘Let’s not fight about it.’
She bit her lip and looked dejected. He knew he was winning her over. He patted her knee and ran his hand over her thigh under her skirt.
‘Listen, after it’s over we go away for the weekend. Would you like that? We’ll have some fun. If you don’t do it and your belly gets big we won’t be able to have any fun. For a long time.’
‘We could keep right on till the last couple of months,’ she said. Dee read articles in women’s magazines and absorbed almost everything.
He made a face. ‘Don’t fight me on this. Please.’
‘Oh, Tony, you know how I feel about you.’
