This special issue brings Native American studies and queer studies into conversation to rethink the U.S. nation-state, Native peoplehood and the role of culture in politics. Prompted by bans on same-sex marriage in the Cherokee and Navajo nations, the contributors examine how marriage, family, kinship, identity and everyday life connect to law and policy, and how histories of queerness and indigeneity intertwine. Essays challenge the Cherokee ban by revisiting traditional acceptance of variation, theorize the visibility of Native writers whose work takes a queer turn, test queer theory against the legacies of settler colonialism, and trace the history of gendercide in Native California and the recovery of two-spirit identity.
