Set in the 50s… awful time for gay men and lesbians but still, it is a great book to settle down with on a rainy day. Lay on your sofa, with a cup of tea and read. Sarah Dreher is an excellent author – check out her Stoner McTavish books too!
Shelby Camden has a great job in a publishing company and a whingeing boyfriend who, bearing in mind the book’s setting, is supposedly a ‘good catch’ but Shelby is suffering from severe migraines and wondering if there is something wrong with her because her boyfriend doesn’t spark her fire any more!
One day a new tenant moves into the apartment alongside hers. Fran Jarvis, ex-army and interesting….
The two women hit it off immediately and their friendship blossoms! Shelby finds herself drawn to the open, funny and intelligent Fran more and more, and to her boring boyfriend less and less… (I wonder why?)
The book accurately captures the atmosphere of the era when it was difficult for any gay person to openly declare their feelings or partners… when friends were lost purely out of fear of ‘homosexual contamination’ and bigoted views were the norm.
If you are a lesbian looking for a book to warm your heart…look no further.
This book is great. A real classic.
