In this second of the series beginning with Fighting For Air, Private Investigator Cal Meredith is called in to help Marguerite Delaney, an underwater archeologist who has been using a sunken model of a Minoan Goddess Ship as a teaching tool. When the wife of her boss is found tied to the ship, she becomes the prime suspect. Was it professional jealousy or because Marguerite’s lover, Stephanie, had had an affair with the victim? As Cal investigates the dead woman’s life and searches for a motive, the facts become murkier, more sordid and more violent. This is a complex and fully developed mystery with plenty of suspects and villains, set against a background of cold water scuba diving in the Pacific Northwest.

Marguerite lies about her relationship with the deceased woman (a rival professor’s wife) and her alibi, then escapes from jail. Cal slogs on nonetheless, uncovering more lies and sources of conflict: goddess theories, underwater archaeology, logging, ecology, the usual sexual infidelities, and even pornography and blackmail.
