Strange Waters
George Sterling
A narrative poem that H. L. Mencken rejected as ‘unfit’ for his magazine subscribers because of its ‘lesbian’ leanings. There was apparently some discussion of the Grabhorns printing it for Sterling, but this booklet is not the work of the Grabhorns or any other readily identifiable San Francisco printer of the period. It was advertised in the August, 1926, Overland Monthly, as available, and Sterling is known to have inscribed two copies with August dates (BAL). Aside from minor contributions and periodical appearances, Strange Waters is Sterling’s final publication and one of his scarcest. When encountered, copies are almost always found with six corrections in the text in Sterling’s hand.
