An ethnography of diversity in Oaxaca, Mexico, a city of half a million where residents are challenging barriers of race and class, redefining gender roles and expanding access for disabled people. Michael Higgins and Tanya Coen focus on often marginalized groups, including the urban poor, transvestite and female sex workers, discapacitados, gays and lesbians, and artists and intellectuals, combining portraits and their own observations to show how racism, sexism, sexuality, spirituality and class struggle play out in daily life and grassroots activism.
