The Case of the Missing Mother

R.J. Hamilton

When outspoken lesbian activist Maia Jayfeather disappears just before a debate with a homophobic minister, her daughter Rebecca Staley and their friends from the gay and lesbian center try to find her before it is too late.

From School Library Journal

Grade 7-10?A mystery series that features a racially varied group of teens as a self-styled sleuthing cooperative. In the first book, homosexual cop Lorenzo Garcia becomes the legal foster parent of Ramon Torres, 16, who has been disowned by his homophobic parents. Prospects are good for his adoption until Officer Garcia’s investigation of a drug operation gets him framed by the dirty cops he’s about to expose. The ‘Pride Pack’ is born when Ramon enlists his friends from the Gay and Lesbian Community Center to help him catch the bad guys. The adoption theme is well integrated, and development of primary and several secondary characters is a thin cut above the second title. The less convincing action of Missing Mother is motivated by 15-year-old Rebecca’s ambivalence toward her lesbian mother and her mother’s AIDS-activist lover, Maia. Ambivalence turns to concern when Maia disappears. Although Rebecca is straight, she recruits the Pride Pack to help her rescue the woman. In both books, the Pack’s adversaries are all shown as too stupid to walk and chew gum at the same time. Plotting is of the standard potboiler variety?barely plausible at times.?Claudia Morrow, Berkeley Public Library, CA
