The Doubtful Guests by Marion Douglas

The Doubtful Guests

Marion Douglas

Gayle McDonagh and her brother Richard are twins, doppelgangers, as their father liked to call them. That was before he started to change, before he started leaving disturbing notes, and before he vanished forever one December day when they were twelve.

The twins are now in their thirties, and Gayle, like her father, has taken to disappearing without warning. This time she is off to Hong Kong, ostensibly to study plant life, but in fact to confront her cousin Elizabeth to find out just what it was that happened on the night before her father’s disappearance.

In Hong Kong Gayle sidetracks herself with passion, discovering as aspect of her sexuality that also asks more questions than it answers. The diversion of love is short-lived, however, and she is ultimately left with questions and her cousin.

When truth and myth collide, what are we left with are ambiguity and doubt, conditions that leave us all doubtful guests.
