The Lilac People by Milo Todd

A Novel

Good, 4 stars

In 1932 Berlin, Bertie, a trans man who works at Magnus Hirschfeld's Institute of Sexual Science, enjoys the city's queer nightlife at the Eldorado Club. When the Nazis take power, the Institute is raided and the clubs are closed, and Bertie flees with his girlfriend Sofie to a farm near Ulm, where they live for more than a decade disguised as an elderly couple. In 1945 they find Karl, a young trans man who has escaped Dachau, collapsed on their land, and must protect him from the Allied forces who are jailing queer survivors. The three decide to emigrate to the United States, though it means hiding the identities they fought for. Told in two timelines and inspired by real events.
