The Other Side of Silence
Joan M. Drury
Every morning, newspaper columnist and feminist lesbian activist Tyler Jones walks her dog in the park across the street from her home in San Francisco. It’s a quiet, uneventful amble until her dog discovers a body. Tyler assumes she’s an innocent bystander until she’s informed that the victim was a man who once threatened her life. Now the San Francisco Police Department thinks she’s a prime suspect in the murder of Dr. Jason Judd. On the surface, Dr Judd’s family members seem the most obvious suspects: a wife who’s been beaten for years; a daughter who’s probably the victim of her father’s sexual and physical abuse; and a son whose method of survival is indulging in equally abusive activities. Tyler finds herself facing a dilemma: can she, does she even want to, reveal a killer that she might feel was justified? In the end, Tyler alone faces “that roar which is the other side of silence.”
