Who Framed Lorenzo Garcia?
R.J. Hamilton; Ruth Simpson
Booted out of the house by his macho father, gay teen Ramon Torres has bounced from foster homes to the streets and back again, finally finding safe haven with a sympathetic gay cop who wants to adopt him. But roadblocks spring up-namely a stereotypically narrow-minded caseworker and the cop getting framed for dealing drugs. Banished to a more ‘suitable’ home, Ramon enlists the help of other teens from his community’s Gay and Lesbian Center (the ‘Pride Pack’ of the title) to clear his would-be father’s name. The action proceeds at a lively clip, but the writing is pedestrian and many of the characters clicheed. The shadow of political correctness looms as well-the teens, for example, are perfectly balanced multiculturally. This title is the first of a series featuring gay and lesbian teens; a second title, The Case of the Missing Mother, is scheduled for simultaneous release. Ages 11-up.

From School Library Journal
Grade 7-10?A mystery series that features a racially varied group of teens as a self-styled sleuthing cooperative. In the first book, homosexual cop Lorenzo Garcia becomes the legal foster parent of Ramon Torres, 16, who has been disowned by his homophobic parents. Prospects are good for his adoption until Officer Garcia’s investigation of a drug operation gets him framed by the dirty cops he’s about to expose. The ‘Pride Pack’ is born when Ramon enlists his friends from the Gay and Lesbian Community Center to help him catch the bad guys. The adoption theme is well integrated, and development of primary and several secondary characters is a thin cut above the second title. The less convincing action of Missing Mother is motivated by 15-year-old Rebecca’s ambivalence toward her lesbian mother and her mother’s AIDS-activist lover, Maia. Ambivalence turns to concern when Maia disappears. Although Rebecca is straight, she recruits the Pride Pack to help her rescue the woman. In both books, the Pack’s adversaries are all shown as too stupid to walk and chew gum at the same time. Plotting is of the standard potboiler variety?barely plausible at times.?Claudia Morrow, Berkeley Public Library, CA
