Drawing on Gilles Deleuze's idea of 'the cinematic' as part of how social reality is produced, she shows how it structures racism, homophobia and misogyny, and theorizes the Black femme as a figure who haunts dominant representations and threatens to reveal alternative social arrangements. Keeling follows the Black femme through Sankofa, images of women in the Black Panther Party, Pam Grier's blaxploitation roles, Set It Off and Eve's Bayou.
