Curtin focuses on the manner in which lesbian and gay characters were presented on the Broadway stage, with particular emphasis on the period from the 1920s to the 1950s. Further, he also studies the critical, popular, and legal responses to those characters. He draws heavily on published reviews in the major New York newspapers. Few of the secondary sources cited date later than 1980. Jonathan Katz’s Gay\/Lesbian Almanac (LJ 2\/1\/83) is conspicuously missing and would constitute an important companion sourcebook. Recommended for its unique focus and its important study of theater censorship. The expansion of the final chapter (carrying the narrative to the 1970s) would have been desirable.
