The book The Homosexual in America came out sixty-nine years ago, and is a testament to the courage of the author. This was about fifteen years bafore the Stonewall Riots, and twenty-five years before the mayoral campaign and subsequent assassination of Harvey Milk. While the title of the book does not differentiate between gay men and lesbians, the book is primarily about the lived experience of gay and bisexual men. Obviously, the author was a homosexual man, and also the book contains the estimate that for every lesbian there are three or four male homosexuals. This is a consciousness-expanding book to this day, as the book contains a synthesis from different disciplines, such as psychiatry and literature. Obviously, this book can now be viewed with the perspective of seven decades from the time of publication, and serves as both a confirmation and a warning of the contemporary gay rights movement. ~ Zachariah B.
