Three untested women hold Zelindar’s fate in their hands: Noya, the young Hadra chosen to be councilor for Zelindar in a time of war; Amairi, the Shokarn highborn who escapes her husband’s violence to become a Wanderer; and Jolaina, the Koumairi peasant girl who becomes the Zarna’s lover and advisor, and, when her beloved is betrayed and overthrown, chooses the life of a warrior. The Hadra are the wild, passionate, self-reliant, untamed women we would like to be and sometimes are. Born with powers, they can speak mind-to-mind with each other; communicate with animals, especially their beloved horses; and defend themselves by returning harm to the sender. In spite of being under assault by jealous rulers, they create their own cities and settlements, and shape their own unique culture that speaks to us of possibilities.
